Our LGBTQ+ Inclusion Statement
The Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising (PAAU) is a single-issue non-profit organization committed to ending elective abortion, focusing on issues that land at the intersection of pregnancy and parenting. Our views on LGBTQ+ inclusion within movement work and advocacy are grounded in our founding principles of equality, nonviolence, and non-discrimination. As a secular and left-of-center organization, we are committed to magnifying the voices of culturally diverse anti-abortion activists and organizers. This statement was written for accountability; accountability to ourselves and to all movements working towards preborn justice and liberation for all.
At PAAU we believe:
People who can get pregnant deserve life-affirming care that is trauma-informed and sensitive to their life experiences
Anti-abortion people who identify as LGBTQ+ exist and deserve opportunities for leadership in movement spaces
Current Internal Practices
“At PAAU, we use the expressed pronouns or expressed preferred name of any individual both in public and private work situations, including media interactions and online conversations and platforms.” – PAAU Staff Handbook
“Towards our vision of collective liberation, we are reconstructing a world in which the Abortion Industrial Complex is dismantled and pregnancy is not an oppressive condition. It aims to achieve a world in which different expressions of pregnancy, parenting, and family structures can exist equally and non-violently. This means that parenting for people who are queer, young, single, working-class, differently abled, and BIPOC can thrive without resulting in violent means such as abortion. This means these families grow in society the same way white, straight, upper-class parenting can.” – PAAU Feminism Stance
PAAU always promotes and uses diverse and inclusive language at our events, outreaches, publications, content, and all other communications, and we actively encourage other organizations to do the same
“To build enough people power to dismantle the Abortion Industrial Complex we need to create relationships with people who are not exactly like ourselves. How close you are or in what circumstances you interact in can be tailored by reasonable boundaries. But first steps are needed. This can look like meeting people where they are at, not as a naive sentiment, but as an intentional effort because you can not “meet someone” when you do not know them.” – PAAU’s Unity Through Diversity Statement
The Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising is committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment for all members of our community. We will not discriminate based on race, ethnicity, national origin, ancestry, color, religion, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability.
